We know that we make positive changes in the lives of our clients, but our work can also make a meaningful difference to the next generation of speech-language pathologists. Many years ago, when I was learning to be a clinician, I observed Dr. Bob, a speech-language pathologist in private practice. Dr. Bob specialized in working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). On the day that I observed, he spent 30 minutes with a precocious five-year-old boy who had ASD.

Advocating for Early Language Assessments

Language Equality and Acquisition for all Deaf Kids (LEAD-K) (SB-210) is a law recently passed in the state of California that mandates early language assessments for young Deaf and hard-of-hearing babies. As other states propose similar bills, they are drawing strong emotions from people, both in support and in opposition to the legislation. The important thing to keep in sight is that the goal of this legislation is to improve academic readiness of all Deaf and hard-of-hearing children when they arrive at kindergarten using appropriate assessment protocols and interventions. No one can find fault with that objective.
