5 WWW.HEALTHSYSTEMMGMT.COM EDITORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM MANAGEMENT | JANUARY | 2017 YOU SAY YOU WANT A RESOLUTION Welcome to 2017! Every January, year after year, many of us set new year’s resolutions for ourselves. Frequently they’re about self-improvement: “I will lose __ pounds.” “I will quit smoking.” “I will eat more greens.” But just as often, resolutions can be about personal/ professional ambitions: “I will write that book I’ve always wanted to write.” “I will be more productive in my work.” “I will find a new job!” Ah, that last one. Supervisors may not want to hear it, but people are, by nature, ambitious. We don’t necessarily want to stay in one job or workplace forever. We want growth — not just in salary, People are, by nature, ambitious. We don’t necessarily want to stay in one job or workplace forever. We want growth. but also in scope of duties. We want to matter, and, at our jobs — the place where we spend most of our waking hours — we want to matter more. Our cover story for this issue should, we hope, help those of you who aspire to advance your careers in 2017. In “2017 Mid-Level Hiring Trends,” staff writer Sarah Sutherland guides us through your navigation of the always-challenging waters you’ll have to wade through in your journey to professional advancement As in most years, the state of recruitment has changed over the course of 2016 and will continue to shift over the course of this year. That’s why, to get ahead in this game, you’ll need to be able to predict these coming trends — especially if you’re seeking to advance in mid-level healthcare positions. In the context of this article, by “mid-level,” we mean jobs falling between entry level (i.e., first-time technicians) and senior-level (physicians, executives, etc.) roles. These are typically nonclinical positions for which career growth doesn’t necessarily entail continuing education. As we always do, we went to the source. We spoke with a senior director of talent acquisition with a healthcare-focused executive search firm. This director contends that there is still a big demand for nonclinical mid-level employees. This demand is so strong, she told us, that she believes at any given time, an estimated 400,000 nonclinical positions are waiting to be filled in the U.S. healthcare industry. That is huge. There are many positions out there waiting for qualified personnel like you to fill them. The article goes on to offer insight for recruiters as well as prospective employees on the best ways to find a great “match” of person to position. Help. It’s what we try to provide every month in these pages, and what we look forward to continuing to provide throughout 2017.
