For General Inquires: lbraby@grhd.org 970.625.6566   JOB DISCRIPTION: Position Type: Full Time   The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) and Medical Technologist (MT) perform diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various disease states. Reports test results as accurately as possible to ensure quality control. Prepares samples for testing. Uses microscopes, a variety of chemicals, computers and precision instruments to perform complex analyses.  May perform supervisory and administrative duties under the direction of the Laboratory Director. Performs clerical tasks related to laboratory services. Follows standardized procedures. performs a variety of tasks.   QUALIFICATIONS: Education:  Completion of a two-year associate degree program in medical laboratory technology or BS in Medical Technology or equivalent.  Must be ASCP / AMT certified or equivalent.  Must have current BLS card within 3 months of initial employment and maintain current status throughout GRHD employment.  Experience:  1-2 years preferred.  Must be eighteen years of age.   KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, procedures and regulations within the field. Must be knowledgeable in the following areas of laboratory medicine: microbiology, hematology, chemistry, blood bank, urinalysis, serology and immunology. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and instruments to perform laboratory testing.  Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Good hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity.    Skilled in identifying problems and recommending solutions. Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, co-workers and the public.  Must be skilled in venipuncture, arterial blood collection and general specimen collection.   Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with precision and accuracy.  Ability to distinguish between fine color graduations.   Ability to work independently and effectively.  Ability to react calmly and effectively in an emergency situation.  Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.   PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use the hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell.  Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.   WORKING CONDITIONS:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The employee is subject to daily exposure to the risk of blood borne pathogens, bacteria, toxic substances, body fluids, communicable diseases, equipment noise and occasionally the combative patient.  Other conditions may exist which are common to the clinical laboratory environment.  Extra precaution must be taken for needle sticks, burns, cuts and falls.
