Respiratory care practitioners treat patients who have breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders. They may treat chronic respiratory diseases, like asthma, emphysema, cystic fibrosis and other lung diseases and disorders, or may care for patients who have had heart attacks or complications from near drowning.
As part of a patient’s treatment, respiratory care practitioners may perform chest physiotherapy to remove mucus from lungs, use lung expansion devices to help patients breathe deeper, ventilate patients to provide breathing support and educate patients and their families about respiratory conditions.
To qualify for respiratory care practitioner positions, candidates need an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, although bachelor’s degrees are preferred. Every state except Alaska requires respiratory care practitioners to be licensed, as well. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, respiratory care practitioner jobs are expected to grow 28% by 2020, so this is a secure field with high demand.
