Children have different medical needs than adults. Their bodies are constantly changing, and they are more susceptible to certain illnesses and medications. That’s why there are medical professions devoted exclusively to children.
Pediatric nurse jobs are specialized positions that work with children from infancy to 18-years-old. These nurses typically have advanced training in pediatrics and are experts on childhood development.
In addition to being experts on childhood health, pediatric nurses must be able to communicate effectively with adolescents. Children may be afraid or unable to explain how they are feeling, but pediatric nurses strive to put their fears to rest and know the right questions to ask to figure out a child’s ailment.
Although they specialize in working with children, responsibilities included in pediatric RN positions are similar to other nursing jobs. They assess patients, take vitals, obtain samples and dispense medication. Like other nursing jobs, pediatric nurses are also responsible for educating patients and their families.
To qualify for pediatric nursing jobs, candidates need to be an RN, but a BSN or MSN is strongly recommended and required for many positions.
