Psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in psychiatry: the study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders. They work with patients who have a variety of mental conditions, including addiction, substance abuse, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety and depression, among other mental health conditions.

Typically, psychiatrists begin by evaluating patients to determine whether their symptoms stem from a medical illness, a mental illness or a combination of both. They may do this through conducting their own psychiatric exams, or ordering other medical tests, including physical exams, brain imaging, MRIs, PETs and blood laboratories.

Treatment plans can include psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, medication, hospitalization or a combination. Unlike psychologists, psychiatrists can prescribe medicine. They may also provide psychotherapy to treat their patients, although many refer patients to psychologists for psychotherapy treatment.

Psychiatrist jobs are not limited to treating patients. Some psychiatrists teach at colleges and universities, offer consultations or conduct research. Traditional psychiatrist positions may be found at group or private practices, hospitals, rehab centers or other medical facilities.
