Through assessing and examining patients, psychiatric nurse practitioners are able to diagnose mental illnesses. Like psychiatrists, they provide therapy and, in many states, are licensed to prescribe medications. They work with a wide patient population and handle a variety of mental issues, including depression and anxiety, among others.
Like most healthcare professions, teaching is a big component of psych NP jobs. Not only do psychiatric nurse practitioners teach patients and their families about psychiatric conditions, but they also instruct families and caretakers on how to react in certain situations. This helps to ensure patients, as well as their families and caretakers, maintain a safe environment.
To qualify for psychiatric nurse practitioner jobs, you need to have your MSN focusing on psychiatry, plus board certification in psychiatric nursing. Psychiatric nurses work in a variety of facilities, including mental health clinics, correctional facilities, private practices and hospitals. In some states, psychiatric NPs can even open their own practices.
