Primary care physicians provide ongoing medical care for their patients. They are usually the first doctor patients visit when they have a medical issue.

Generally, primary care physicians treat common illnesses and conditions and perform routine screenings, immunizations and physicals. Typical duties include examining and diagnosing patients, creating treatment plans and prescribing medication. When patients come in with advanced illnesses, primary care physicians may refer them to a specialist for further testing and treatment.

Although primary care physician jobs are typically in an outpatient setting, physicians may continue to direct and assist in the care of patients after they have been referred to a specialist or the hospital.

Primary care physician positions are available to a variety of healthcare professionals with different specialties. Providers include family practitioners, pediatricians, internists, obstetricians and gynecologists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Requirements for primary care physician jobs differ depending on specialty, but all candidates need to complete post-graduate education and training.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for physicians and surgeons are expected to grow 24% by 2020, creating 168,300 new jobs.
