Physicians diagnose and treat patients. They deal with all types of illnesses from the common cold to autoimmune diseases. Depending on their specialty, they may provide healthcare to a general population, or work with a specific group of people. Some specialties include anesthesiology, family and general medicine, internal medicine, pediatric, surgery and more.

Typical duties include taking down a patient’s medical history, ordering and reviewing tests, diagnosing illness and injuries, prescribing medication and designing treatment plans. Physicians must also be available to answer healthcare-related questions and teach patients how to live a healthy lifestyle.

Candidates must be prepared to spend a long time in post-secondary education followed by a grueling training regimen. Students must complete a bachelor’s degree before spending 4 years in medical school. Before graduates are ready for physician jobs, they must spend an additional 3 to 8 years doing internships and residencies.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 24% growth in surgeon and physician jobs by 2020. This is largely due to the expanding healthcare needs of the aging baby boomer population.
