A lot of work goes into filling prescriptions. From verifying details with physicians to dealing with insurance companies, pharmacists ensure patients get the correct medication in the most cost efficient manner possible.

In addition to corresponding with doctors and insurance companies, pharmacists also interact directly with patients. This includes instructing patients when and how to take medicine, providing information about side effects and ensuring the prescription will not interact with other medication the patient is taking.

Pharmacists are also responsible for answering any questions a patient has concerning a medication. These questions may be about a prescribed medication, but they can also be related to over the counter drugs. As a result, prospective pharmacists go through extensive training. A Pharm D. is required to become a pharmacist, and this can take between 6 and 8 years of post-secondary education to complete.

Although growth has slowed a bit in the past few years, pharmacist jobs are still growing at a relatively high pace. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects pharmacy jobs to grow 25% by 2020. As baby boomers continue to age and advances in medication occur, pharmacist jobs should continue to experience above average growth.
