Pediatric physical therapists provide treatment and education to children who have problems with motor skills. These problems can be caused by a developmental delay, birth defect, chronic illness or injury. To be successful, the therapist and the family need to work together as a team to “gain trust and commitment to enable success in functional gains and meet agreed-upon goals,” according to Jonathan Greenwood, PT, MS, NDT, PCS.
Kids need to be kids, so injecting fun into therapy will help with treatment. When dealing with cases that involve sports-related injuries, PTs can combine play and function to improve children’s strength, mobility and gross motor skills. Aquatic therapy can also make a big difference in pediatric care; especially when it comes to children who have been in PT long enough to feel burnt out on land-based care; those who seem ready to move to the next functional level but need a "push" to get there; and those with little other therapeutic option.
