Pediatric occupational therapists promote appropriate development among children. They focus on improving fine motor skills, sensory motor skills and visual motor skills. This can include things like holding utensils, writing, shape recognition, and getting dressed. Some children who need occupational therapy have medical disabilities, while others are simply lagging behind in motor development. Whatever the case, pediatric occupational therapists endeavor to equip the child with the necessary skills to be independently functional.
Because they work with children, pediatric occupational therapists must be patient. Pediatric occupational therapist jobs aren’t like traditional occupational therapist jobs where the patient does exercises over and over again. Children may not understand the instructions, or may find the exercise to be boring. When working with children, the exercises must be more creative. They are often hidden in playtime activities which allow the child to have fun, while also promoting developmental growth.
To qualify for pediatric occupational therapist jobs, applicants must hold a master’s degree from an accredited occupational therapy program, have completed a clinical internship, and obtain any certifications required by the hiring state.
