Patient care technicians assist doctors, nurses and other medical professionals in tending to patients. They provide direct patient care, including taking vitals, collecting specimens, bathing, feeding, grooming and changing bed linens. Typically, patient care technician positions involve spending more time with a patient than doctors or nurses, so they must have excellent interpersonal skills.

Patient care technician jobs are great for those who are interested in the healthcare field, but don’t want to spend a lot of time and money on a post-secondary education. Certificates usually take less than a year to complete and are available at community colleges and vocational schools. Continuing education is important for patient care technicians to stay up-to-date, so a minimum of 14 CE hours is required each year to maintain certification.
