Outpatient occupational therapists provide treatment to a broad patient population. From children with cerebral palsy to elderly patients with Alzheimer’s, outpatient occupational therapist jobs are essential in helping patients with disabilities to complete fundamental activities, such as bathing, dressing, eating and more, on their own.

During visits, occupational therapists may observe and assess patients to come up with a treatment plan that will help them complete day-to-day tasks. Depending on a patient’s condition, occupational therapists employ a variety of methods to provide treatment. Working with a team of physicians, nurses, therapists and other medical personnel, they may use exercise to help strengthen muscles, teach patients how to conserve their energy, train patients on using adaptive equipment and more.

Outpatient occupational therapy positions are generally found in private practices or rehabilitation centers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, occupational therapy jobs are expected to increase 33% by 2020, in large part due to the aging baby boomer population.
