Oncology managers oversee the operations of the oncology department and provide care for cancer patients of all ages.
Like other oncology nurses, oncology managers may provide direct patient care. They work closely with cancer patients and their families, helping them to cope, teaching them about the disease and explaining treatment options. Additional managerial responsibilities include managing the budget and supervising the staff, which may include scheduling, hiring, training and firing staff members.
Usually, oncology manager jobs are filled by nurses who have at least a bachelor’s degree, although an MSN is preferred in many facilities. Before qualifying for oncology manager positions, nurses need at least 3-5 years’ experience in the oncology department.
