Medical office assistants complete day-to-day administrative and clerical tasks in a practice or other healthcare facility. They are usually the first person a patient sees when walking into an office, and their role plays an important part in getting patients ready for a visit.

Office assistant’s duties include greeting patients, filling out insurance forms, scheduling appointments, and gathering medical information from patients. They must have good verbal and written communication skills and attention to details. The information they are responsible for is vital and must be accurately documented.

A high school diploma is the only educational requirement for office assistant jobs, but applicants should have strong word processing skills and be familiar with spreadsheets. Most additional training is done on the job.
