Neurological physical therapists specialize in evaluating and treating patients who have movement problems as a result of nervous system dysfunctions. Since neurological issues can happen to anyone at any age, neurological physical therapists treat a diverse patient population.

Typically, they’ll treat patients who have ALS, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, fibromyalgia, and stroke, among other neurological injuries and issues. Like other physical therapy jobs, neurological physical therapy jobs are geared toward helping patients to improve mobility and alleviate pain. Neurologic physical therapy, in particular, also aids patients in improving balance and vision, as well as speech.

Depending on the injury or illness, the part of the brain that understands how to perform functional activities may be damaged. Neurological physical therapists may have to re-teach patients how to use those functions by training a different part of the brain. With the right treatment, however, neurological physical therapists help their patients lead functional, independent lives.
