Job Description: Columbia Memorial Hospital, located in the beautiful and historic North Oregon Coastal town of Astoria, is seeking to add a new Medical Technologist to its Laboratory Team.  Under the general supervision of the laboratory manager, the medical technologist performs various complex and routine clinical laboratory assays, evaluates validity of results obtained, troubleshoots equipment and/or testing problems, and accurately reports test results, according to laboratory policy and procedure.  Position duties may affect direct patient care through the completion of analytical tests that allow others to care for patients.  This position is vital to the delivery of patient-centered care to our community.   Job Requirements Confidentiality:  Frequent access to patient records; expected to maintain full confidentiality in accordance to HIPAA guidelines. Skills: Strong written, oral and organizational skills required.  Attention to detail is required. Experience with blood collection technique on all age groups. Must be able to perform high complex testing. Must have working knowledge of pre-analytical, analytical, as well as post analytical testing variables and how to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance thus working toward achieving the highest standard for clinical laboratory testing. Computer skills, excellent customer service, and being an ongoing liaison between clients and providers. Knowledge in laboratory compliance and Medical Necessity. Must be able to multitask under stressful situations. Must have working knowledge of test result interpretation in order to address questions from clients and providers. License/Certification MT (ASCP) or equivalent registration, or MT eligible under Medicare laboratory; regulations. BLS certification required. Must provide a copy of High School Diploma or equivalent. Education and/or Experience       Preferred Education:  Bachelor's degree in medical technology, plus one year of internship leading toward certification as a medical technologist by ASCP or its equivalent.  Six months to one year experience is preferred.

Job Description: Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.  valuates specimens for acceptability for proper testing.  Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens. Organizes workload for maximum efficiency in order to complete tests being performed. Accurately performs tests as requested on specimens received. Verifies accuracy of results before reporting results. Comparing to previous results when possible, verifying with the patient or doctor any changes in medication, etc., as appropriate. Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures. Reports results within time limits established for test procedures. Reports results for stats, abnormals, critical values, and other categories of special requests as defined by laboratory policy. Documents special handling required for test results that meet outlying (established) criteria. Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor. Performs appropriate quality control for the test procedure. Accurately analyzes and evaluates quality control results obtained before accepting and reporting patient test results. Records results obtained for quality control testing as defined in test procedure. Appropriately notifies supervisor of discrepant quality control results. Troubleshoots any problems to determine is it a control issue, an instrument issue, a sample issue or other.   Job Requirements Minimum Education  Associate's degree in a relevant science required.  Bachelor's Degree Preferred.  MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registration or has completed a technician training program in a school accredited/approved by HHS, or MLT eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations. Minimum Work Experience  A minimum of four months' clinical laboratory internship preferred.  1-2 years of previous clinical laboratory experience is preferred. Required Licenses/Certifications  ASCP or equivalent Certification, preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Microbiology, Able to multitask and prioritize.  Computer skills. Runs and reviews outstanding work lists and follows up on all outstanding specimens. Performs and records all Quality Control results and all required maintenance on laboratory instruments. Perform expected responsibilities of position with knowledge, competency, and appropriateness to ages of patients/customers served. Reports all test results in a timely manner and calls panic values to physicians and nursing units. Communicates any technical problems to the Department Supervisor. Communicates any problems in result reporting to the Department Supervisor. Runs and reviews outstanding work lists and follows up in all outstanding specimens. Performs and records all Quality Control results. Performs and records all required maintenance on laboratory instruments. Performs manual procedure diffs, body fluids, urinalysis.  Performs all Blood Bank testing including type and screen, cross matches and routine antibody testing. Performs Proficiency testing as part of normal workload with satisfactory results. Handles patient complaints and reports any problems to Department Supervisor. Processes Emergency Room specimen STAT from pneumatic tube. Sends out specimens to reference laboratory. Uses laboratory computer to run work lists, and broadcast results. Checks results from laboratory instruments to analyzer screens. Interprets results for neonates, infant, school age, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients. Periodic review of work for compliance with SOP. Qualifications: Currently licensed/registered in NYS as Clinical Laboratory Technologist. BS in Medical Technology or related science or qualified under NYS Department of Health as a Medical Technologist. Previous experience in all areas of Chemistry, Hematology and Blood Bank. Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office and strong communications and interpersonal skills.
