Job Description: Medical Technologist/Generalist Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital   Work independently to perform and evaluate complex laboratory tests in various areas of clinical laboratory. Perform manual cell counts, microscopic tests, and white blood cell differential counting on blood and body fluids. Analyze specimens of biological material for biochemical and/or biological composition. Set up and perform calibrations, general troubleshooting, and maintenance on different analytical instruments used in Clinical Chemistry and Hematology. Act as Blood Bank technologist to include ABO and Rh typing, antibody screening, compatibility testing, direct antiglobulin testing, and transfusion reaction investigation. Perform all antibody identification procedures, recognize, investigate, and resolve basic to complex serological problems to completion. Identify blood products suitable for transfusion. Perform testing in Microbiology laboratory to include gram stains, blood culture work-ups, a variety of rapid tests, and planting of various specimens on media indicated. Perform data entry using SUNQUEST. Understand and operate complex precision instruments and a variety of automated and electronic equipment. Assist in developing and modifying procedures and programs to ensure the accuracy of tests. Perform all required Quality Control procedures. Document results accurately, and follow-through appropriately on all outliers. Notify supervisor of any unusual or unexpected results and of all existing and/or potential problems of any nature, utilizing the appropriate laboratory and hospital documentation forms. Report all critical values to the appropriate person and complete required documentation. Maintain records in complete, accurate and legible manner. Handle specimens for movement in and out of the laboratory, and perform various clerical and pre-analytical duties. Assist with orientation of new staff members, students, residents, fellows, etc as directed. Assume duties required for smooth operation of the lab.   Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Medical Technology or related field and one year of internship or work experience in the job offered or related field of medical technology.  Internship or work experience must include working in a blood bank, including ABO and RH typing, antibody screening, and resolving complex antibody identifications. Experience must also include working in a microbiology laboratory including reading of gram stains and positive blood culture work ups.
