We have an immediate opening for a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) to support the exciting and cutting-edge work being done in our stem cell division, FamilyCord! The CLS will perform associated clinical laboratory functions, including cord blood processing and cryopreservation, laboratory documentation and quality control.  Two shift options: Full-time (benefit-eligible) Sunday – Thursday or weekend (Saturday & Sunday) only.   Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Performs clinical laboratory testing, recording and reporting according to standard operating procedures, as appropriate. Processes client cord blood or peripheral blood progenitor cells according to established procedures. Records and assists in maintaining accurate inventory of client cord blood or peripheral blood progenitor cells in the liquid nitrogen storage tanks. Prepares and properly documents all test specimens referred to reference laboratories. Becomes proficient in newly developed laboratory procedures and testing as related to the processing of cord blood or peripheral blood progenitor cells. Assists and performs ancillary laboratory procedures for manipulating and testing cord blood or peripheral blood progenitor cells. Prepares frozen cord or peripheral blood progenitor cells for transfer to another facility as requested. Maintains the general work area in a neat and organized manner to help promote a safe work environment. Conforms to the policies mandated for utilization of all personal protective equipment. Becomes familiar with and adheres to established guidelines for laboratory safety. Reports all safety violations and accidents to the Laboratory Manager/Director, Laboratory Operations for immediate intervention. Assists in providing educational support regarding cord blood processing and storage to inquiring clients and potential clients.  Quality Assurance Performs quality control procedures on laboratory instruments as scheduled and assigned. Maintains quality control/quality assurance records. Confirms the daily performance of testing procedures through quality control performance in the standard operating procedures. Attends presentations and in-service training sessions as required for continuing education. Attends and participates in in-service training related to the development and performance of new laboratory procedures. Participates in the California Cryobank Stem Cell Services Quality Assurance Program. Maintains accurate laboratory client files according to standard procedures and regulatory requirements. Assists with cover for responses to emergency situations related to storage freezers and other monitored equipment. Reports any “out-of-control” results or equipment failures to the immediate supervisor for investigation or repair. Ensures the availability of supplies involved in the performance of laboratory procedures and assist with ordering when necessary. Other duties and projects as required.  Requirements: Bachelor's degree (BA or B.S.), completion of an accredited medical technology training program, and three to five years’ related experience in stem cell processing and/or microbiology, blood banking or flow cytometry.   Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license. Familiarity with laboratory, cell therapy/transplant and medical terminology; training in handling liquid nitrogen. Phase-contrast microscopy and flow cytometry skills Ability to perform algebraic calculations to determine concentrations, ratios, percentiles and statistical knowledge to include mean, median, standard deviation and variations. Ability to evaluate results, determine acceptability and initiate appropriate actions. Florida State Licensure as a MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST in all Laboratory areas is required. Associates' Degree in medical technology with formal medical technology training. Bachelor's Degree is preferred. Minimum 2 years of experience as a Medical Technologist in a hospital laboratory is preferred. Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment. Strong team work and collaboration abilities.

Job Description: Education:  Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related Science degree along with the successful completion of an approved formal training program in Medical Technology. Experience:  Previous experience in a clinical laboratory setting with experience processing specimens for analysis or referral.  Experience in the collection of specimens for testing.  Experience with laboratory information systems and related computer programs. Other Requirements:  Active State of Florida license as a Medical Technologist in Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Serology.  Registry with either ASCP, AMT, NCA, AAB, or HEW preferred. Responsibilities: Accurate and reproducible results of routine and complex manual and automated testing as ordered by the clinician or Laboratory Director.  Results are produced in a timely manner. Performs and understands quality control programs including evaluation of values, documentation of errors and corrective action, and the maintenance of records in the appropriate logs. Performs and records scheduled equipment maintenance, troubleshooting of equipment problems, and provides immediate notification to department supervisor in the event of any malfunctions. Recognizes normal and life-threatening results and follows protocol for notification of results to the clinician along with complete documentation on worksheets and in the LIS. Proficient operation of the LIS and other computer related programs.  Keeps current with changes and upgrades to each system. Participates in Proficiency Testing programs along with other departmental quality assurance programs.  Understands the importance of specimen integrity and recognizes any events that may compromise the quality of testing and reporting of results. Willingness to assume other duties as required.
