Job Description: Med Tech (Staff) MAJOR FUNCTION: Performs testing following standardized procedures on patient samples within each of the major laboratory areas which aids physicians in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various disease states. Obtains appropriate samples from patient for testing. Resolves problems and interprets results as to accuracy, acceptability and critical limits. Assists Section Leaders with area specific duties and provides work direction/supervision in absence of Section Leader. QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCE DETERMINATION: I. EDUCATION a. Associate or B.S. Medical Technology or related science. b. One year clinical internship at an approved school of medical technology. c. Non traditional route to established skill level may be accepted after review of educatiom and experience. II. LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: a. MLT (ASCP) or MT (ASCP) registration or other nationally recognized certification credentials. III. EXPERIENCE: a. Staff MT/MLT - Previous clinical laboratory experience preferred, but not required. b. Senior MT/MLT - Three to five year’s clinical laboratory experience at Martha Jefferson Hospital with good performance evaluation or ten to fifteen years clinical laboratory experience prior to employment at Martha Jefferson Hospital. ORGANIZATIONAL STANDARDS: Martha Jefferson employees are expected to treat coworkers, patients and customers with courtesy, respect and consideration; keep patient and business information confidential; and promote teamwork to accomplish department and organizational objectives. MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST - PRN - VARIED HOURS, VARIED DAYS The Medical Technologist performs laboratory testing in one or more sections of the laboratory that assists with the diagnosis of patients. The tasks and responsibilities include: Processes specimens, prepares reagents, performs testing procedures; reports and interprets test results. Performs quality control testing, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting. Verifies analytic accuracy, precision, sensitivity and references ranges for test methods. Works with Physician to analyze results and conduct more difficult, non-routine tests. Serves as a consultant to medical laboratory technicians and phlebotomists as needed. Orients and mentors new staff members. Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required. Responds to needs of laboratory by assisting others voluntarily or at supervisor's request. May include department rotation or shift change. 7. Every third weekend rotation required as meets the department needs, including holiday rotation as assigned. 8. Daily checks on all reagents and supplies to ensure uninterrupted service. 9. Collects specimens from patients by venipuncture, finger/heel sticks or arterial punctures required. Collects throat cultures and instructs customers on other collection procedures. 10. Knows age related normal values for tests performed in assigned area. 11. After competency training, should be able to perform more than one task at a time. 12. Adheres to confidentiality of information as stated in DeKalb Medical Center's Confidentiality Agreement policy #5517. Qualifications: Should have successfully completed a certifying examination approved by the Georgia Department of Human Resources or should be ASCP registry eligible as a medical technologist, and should meet one of the requirements listed below: 1. Bachelor's degree in medical technology from an accredited college or university. 2. Or, successful completion in an accredited college or university of a course of study which meets all academic requirements for a bachelor's degree in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences, and at least one (1) year of pertinent laboratory experience or training accepted by the Georgia Department of Human Resources. 3. May be qualified as HEW MT or HHS MT.
