Job Description: PURPOSE Under general supervision and following established laboratory procedures, performs routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This position may also perform phlebotomy functions.  Carries out all duties while maintaining compliance and confidentiality and promoting the mission and philosophy of the organization. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and for reporting test results. Completes necessary paperwork and logs specimens. Arranges for pickup or delivery of specimens sent to reference lab or outside lab. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples. Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies and documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results and either corrects the problem or refers to appropriate personnel for resolution. Recognizes alert/critical test results and informs appropriate personnel. Communicates information such as test results, normal ranges, and specimen requirements to authorized sources. Demonstrates technical laboratory skills to students and new employees. Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning. Responsible for administering testing according to policies and procedures. Responsible for applying Total Quality Management (TQM) guidelines to laboratory processes. Adheres to all company policies, including but not limited to, OSHA, HIPAA, compliance and Code of Conduct. Regular and dependable attendance. Follows the core competencies set forth by the Company, which are available for review on CMSweb. Works holiday shift(s) as required by Company policy. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs phlebotomy functions. May conduct and/or assist Lab Manager with assessment reviews. If qualified, performs high complexity testing only under the onsite, direct supervision of supervisor. May assist Lab Manager with scheduling, Kronos and approving time off for lab staff. Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Education & Experience:   High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor degree in Science or related field or at least one year experience in laboratory (can include school laboratory training).  Phlebotomy may be required. Qualified as Testing Personnel as defined under CLIA. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of lab policies and procedures. Knowledge of CLIA regulations. Strong attention to detail. Ability to handle competing priorities. Ability to work in a team environment. Ability to analyze problems, manage conflict, and multi-task. Excellent interpersonal & problem solving skills. Primary Function An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), preferably certified as a nationally registered EMT or as a Delaware-certified EMT, whose responsibility is the safe and efficient transportation of patients from referring hospitals or to other facilities and destinations. The primary function of the EMT is the safe and efficient operation of the vehicle. The EMT functions during transport as an assistant to the Transport Registered Nurse or Respiratory Therapist. All direct care is provided under EMT Certification. Additional skills performed by the EMT are under the direct supervision of Transport Team RN/RT and under Medical Command Officer direction. Essential Functions Operates the Transport Team ambulance in a safe and efficient manner. Plans and successfully navigates the route to and from Nemours and referring hospitals. Must have and maintain a driving record that is acceptable to Nemours’ insurance carrier. Emergency Vehicle Operators Certificate (EVOC) or approved equivalent required. Reports to manager any change in driving status that could affect the individual’s ability to effectively and safety perform the duties of the position. Acts as part of the patient care team to transport patients safely via ambulance. Provides direct patient care under the Delaware Statewide Standard Treatment Protocol and all other state protocols that may pertain.   Performs vital sign assessment, including blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate, temperature, pulse oximetry and end-tidal CO2 monitoring. Performs focused physical assessment. Assists in the preparation of stable patients for intra-hospital transport, ensuring compliance with facility transport-regulations, protocol and procedure under the direction of the RN/RT. This position is responsible for the provision of laboratory services by the performance of clinical laboratory procedures and related tasks for the clinical laboratory. Performs analytical procedures using manual and automated methods and through a variety of clinical laboratory methodologies (e.g., manual/visual plate-reading, microscopy, analyzer, rapid-test, etc.). In this function, must be able to perform all required calibration, quality control, statistical calculations and other process control and mathematical functions. Associate must also be able to understand concepts such as linearity and standard deviation as they apply to the performance of analytical testing in a clinical laboratory. Specific procedures performed depend upon the associate’s specific assignment; for example, identifies bacteriological organisms in Microbiology, or performs analysis of potassium in Chemistry. Orders, accessions, statuses and reports results of tests performed on patient specimens, monitoring a variety of critical clinical issues, such as patient identifiers, specimen quality, order appropriateness, etc. In this function, must be able to read and understand a variety of written material such as specimen requisitions, worksheets, patient identification, specimen requirements, etc., whether performing this task manually (e.g., on paper) or through the use of an information system. Must be able to check and verify information such as patient identification, lot numbers, expiration dates, etc., and act appropriately. Monitors pending logs regularly to provide rapid turnaround time. Uses, calibrates and performs troubleshooting and maintenance on laboratory equipment following established procedures and as assigned by supervisor. Must be able to take responsibility for laboratory equipment performance, as demonstrated by interactions with technical representatives for instrument maintenance, both preventive and repair; must be able to successfully perform start-up and shut-down of complex analytical equipment. Recognizes need for additional quality control, maintenance or specimens prior to releasing test results. If specifically trained and assigned to specimen collection, collects specimens from patients and others or assists, e.g., assists physicians at bone marrow aspirate collections. Such collections may take place in a variety of environments. Such collections may require entering patient isolation rooms, whereby associate must follow appropriate infection control procedures. Transports specimens as assigned (for example, from Operating Room), following appropriate procedures. Reviews technical and administrative procedures as assigned. The medical lab technician is responsible for staying informed about section changes, procedure changes and updates, etc. Reviews questions about procedures with section supervisor or designee as needed, informing supervisor when confusion about instructions or procedures exists. Handles supply and inventory issues as required/assigned, identifying key technical parameters, such as lot numbers, storage requirements, etc., as required for performance of laboratory procedures. Follows laboratory section inventory procedures (e.g., recording date received, condition when received, checking order forms, invoices, etc.). Retrieves supplies and equipment from storage areas as needed. Answers telephone as assigned; in this function, interacts routinely with a variety of individuals, including physicians, other clinical staff, patients and their families, inspectors, vendors, etc. Must be able to demonstrate good customer service; for example, answering telephone promptly, referring calls appropriately, etc. Follows all laboratory and hospital safety policies (including, but not limited to, chemical safety, e.g., the laboratory’s Chemical Hygiene Plan, infection control policies, etc.). Must be able to perform functions using personal protective equipment and barrier protection, such as disposable gloves, laboratory coats, shields, goggles, etc. Must be able to handle a variety of hazardous materials, such as chemicals and pathogenic organisms. Trains others as assigned (e.g., students, residents, new employees, etc.). Seeks to promote a positive patient experience with every patient encounter, and participates in activities or education to improve patient experience. Participates in department and hospital quality and improvement programs. Performs phlebotomy as needed. Other duties as assigned. Requirements Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory required. Florida Technologist License in Chemistry, Hematology, Serology, Microbiology and Immunohematology, Molecular Pathology required.
