Medical assistants are an integral part of a physician’s office. They help the office to run smoothly by supporting physicians and other healthcare professionals in their duties. Some medical assistants help with administrative tasks, and others assist in clinical tasks.

Administrative medical assistant’s duties include filling out insurance forms and medical information. They will also schedule appointments and order supplies.

Clinical medical assistants do more hands-on work. Their duties include preparing blood work, conducting basic laboratory tests, and sterilizing medical equipment. With additional training, some clinical medical assistants can complete simple medical tasks such as drawing blood, changing dressings, and removing stitches.

Although a high school diploma is the only educational requirement, it is advisable to get postsecondary training through certification or associates programs. This gives job seekers a competitive edge along with more room for advancement and higher pay.

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, medical assistant jobs are expected to grow 33%, much faster than average, from 2010 to 2020.
