Minimum data set coordinators are responsible for arranging patient care in a Medicare or Medicaid certified long-term care facility. Relying heavily on research, MDS coordinator jobs exist to create higher quality, more efficient healthcare plans for residents.
MDS is a process mandated by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services for all patients in Medicare or Medicaid certified medical facilities. This process, which is sent electronically to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, is a carefully documented clinical assessment of patients to help staff identify health problems.
Typical duties include administering procedures for care plans, collecting data about residents, conducting assessments, examining the physical and mental states of patients and drawing data from charts. The data they collect is sent electronically to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid services and used to improve the standard of care in the facility.
Usually, MDS coordinators are RNs, but it’s not uncommon to find LVNs and NPs in the position. Although MDS coordinator jobs are not patient facing, most facilities require significant clinical experience to ensure candidates are capable of drawing conclusions from collected data.
