Licensed vocational nurses (also known as licensed practical nurses in some states) are nurses who provide basic medical care under the supervision of registered nurses and doctors. Although their nursing duties aren’t as extensive as RNs or other advanced practice nurses, licensed vocational nurse jobs still involve direct patient care.
Typical duties of LVNs include checking vitals, changing bandages and inserting catheters. LVNs also help patients with daily tasks, such as using the bathroom, bathing and getting dressed. In some states, LVNs can give medication and start IVs. Others require direct supervision from an RN or doctor.
Those wishing to qualify for LVN positions must complete a 1 year training program (typically offered at community colleges or vocational schools) and pass the NCLEX-PN. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, LVN positions are expected to grow 22% by 2020, creating a favorable job outlook.
