Laboratory directors are responsible for supervising staff and overseeing all operations of a lab. They ensure the lab produces quality work while maintaining the overall safety and security of test results.

Like their staff members, laboratory directors analyze and perform tests. They look for minute changes in specimens, and may have to deal with hazardous materials. Labs are important in diagnosing illnesses and finding cures, so attention to detail and a high level of accuracy are necessary. Laboratory directors must make sure the entire lab is performing at a high level.

Managerial duties include hiring, training, evaluating and firing staff members, implementing policies and procedures, budgeting and ensuring that the facility is in compliance with all rules and regulations.

Laboratory director jobs can be found in a variety of facilities, including hospitals, research centers, universities, private labs and more. Candidates usually need to be a medical doctor or hold a PhD in a scientific field to qualify for laboratory director positions. Prior lab experience is necessary, as directors should be capable of both performing tests and overseeing staff.
