Integumentary physical therapy is a type of physiotherapy dealing with the examination and treatment of the skin and related organs. Professionals working in integumentary physical therapy jobs will examine and diagnose patients and help them to come up with a plan of care.
A variety of skin conditions may be treated with integumentary physical therapy, including abscesses, burns, contusions, scars, surgical wounds, ulcers, vascular disease and other traumatic injuries. Integumentary physical therapy may accomplish treatment through a variety of techniques, ranging from the application of topical agents, exercises and compression garments to manual therapy, edema control, splinting and electrical stimulation.
Although most physical therapy educational programs provide integumentary experience, in order to qualify for integumentary physical therapy jobs, candidates need significant post-graduate training with the integumentary system.
