A Patient Care Technician (PCT) works with doctors, nurses, support staff and other health care professionals and are responsible for assisting them and looking after direct patient care in hospitals, assisted living facilities, rehabilitation clinics or nursing homes. Also known as nurse's aides or patient care assistants, PCTs are important members of the health care team.


Patient care technician jobs can be broadly divided into three main areas essential to health care. These are collecting samples, recording the patient's vital health information and assisting them.

In order to qualify for patient care technician employment, you must possess a high school diploma or a GED equivalent. Additionally, you have to take up a training program which will cover all the important aspects of the job and prepare you to fulfill your responsibilities with proficiency. These programs usually last about four to twelve weeks and also include a certificate in first aid.
