Hospice nurse aide jobs are an integral part of the hospice community. They help patients take care of everyday tasks in addition to performing basic medical duties. Because they spend so much time with their patients, they often develop close relationships with patients and their families.

Typical duties include measuring vitals, administering medication, bathing and lifting patients. In some facilities, hospice nurse aides may be required to complete other basic medical procedures, such as checking blood sugar, dressing wounds and performing urine tests. Hospice nurse aides who work for home health companies may also need to teach patients’ families how to provide proper care for their loved one between visits.

In order to qualify for hospice nurse aide jobs, candidates need to become certified nursing aides. Programs vary by state, but can usually be completed at community colleges. Upon completion, students can also become certified through the National Board for Certification of Palliative and Hospice Care. This requires a CNA and at least 2,000 hours of work as a nurse’s aide.

Hospice nurse aides may work in a variety of facilities, including nursing homes, hospice centers, hospitals and home health companies.
