Home health and hospice directors of nursing supervise the agency’s nursing staff while managing quality client care. They act as a liaison between nursing staff and physicians and strive to provide top quality care to patients.
Home health DON jobs can be challenging because the nurses of a home health agency travel from home to home, making direct supervision difficult. Much of the supervisory tasks revolve around educating staff on safe and effective services, policies and procedures. Home health DONs need to have an exceptional eye for detail as they will be constantly monitoring patient charts and reports to ensure patients are receiving the care they need.
Additional responsibilities may include hiring, training and assessing employees, budgeting, assessing agency policy and procedures for quality improvement and assisting with marketing and public relations.
In order to qualify for home health DON jobs or director of nursing hospice jobs, candidates need to be an RN with a few years of experience. A BSN is preferred and additional certifications may be desirable depending on the facility.
