Hand injuries can be devastating events with life-altering consequences. Previously simple tasks can become extremely complicated due to loss of hand function. Certified hand therapists help patients regain their independence by providing rehabilitation for the hand and upper limb (wrist, elbow and shoulder).

Certified hand therapists are either physical therapists or occupational therapists who have extensive knowledge and experience with hand conditions. Hand therapists need at least 5 years of clinical experience before they can become certified, and they must be re-certified every five years.

Although hand therapists provide typical therapy for hands, including exercises to increase motion and strength, their duties go beyond treatment for hand injuries. Some patients will never regain full use of their hands, so hand therapists also teach patients how to manage pain and how to function without the use of certain hand motions. Like all therapy positions, hand therapist jobs are geared toward equipping patients with the skills necessary to maintain independence.
