EKG technician jobs are similar to cardiac technologist positions in that both assist in performing tests to help physicians diagnose cardiovascular conditions. EKG technicians, however, have fewer responsibilities and therefore require less education.
EKGs record the electrical impulses from a patient’s heart. Technicians may use EKGs to perform stress tests or administer Holter monitoring tests. This involves hooking patients up to EKG monitors and overseeing the test. Technicians should be comfortable doing heavy lifting, because they will be transporting patients and heavy equipment regularly.
Training is usually done on the job, but job hunters seeking a competitive edge can obtain cardiology certificates from technical schools or community colleges.
EKG technician jobs are most commonly found in hospitals, labs and cardiologists’ offices, among other healthcare facilities. Technicians can expect to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends, particularly if they are employed in hospitals.
