Department directors oversee a particular medical department. They are in charge of researching, planning, and implementing services into a department to ensure it is functioning at an optimal level.

Because department directors are tasked with making sure the department runs smoothly, they are responsible for the employees in the department. They interview, hire, assess, discipline and fire employees when necessary. In order to ensure employees provide quality care, department managers also supervise and train them.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 22% increase in all medical and health services management positions by 2020, so the outlook for department director positions is favorable. Professionals with department director jobs may work in medical education departments, internal medicine, surgery, trauma and other sectors. Typically, they are physicians with significant experience in their department.
