Dental assistants help dentists and dental hygienists care for patients. Their duties range from basic patient care to administrative tasks and can vary depending on state.

Some of the patient care tasks included in dental assistant jobs may include making the patient comfortable, holding suction hoses and teach patients about good dental hygiene. They may assist dentists and hygienists by preparing treatment areas, sterilizing equipment and passing instruments during dental procedures. Administrative duties, such as maintaining dental records, scheduling appointments and billing are often assigned to dental assistants.

Depending on the state in which a dental assistant practices, they may also be able to do more advanced work, including coronal polishing, sealant application, fluoride application and topical anesthetics application.

To qualify for dental assistant positions, you must complete either a 1 year certification program or a 2 year associate’s program. Some states require additional certification.
