Chief medical officers are the physicians in charge of a hospital or other medical practice. They are highly experienced physicians with proven leadership experience.

Although chief medical officers do not typically provide direct patient care, they still need to have clinical experience. Because they oversee all doctors in a facility, chief medical officers must train new doctors and instruct physicians on how to care for patients, particularly those with complicated medical issues. Before qualifying for chief medical officer jobs, doctors need significant clinical experience.

Previous managerial experience is also required for candidates seeking chief medical officer jobs.
