Burn ICU nurse jobs require a special kind of nurse who is empathetic, yet emotionally stable enough to handle dealing with gruesome wounds. They will work closely with patients who have severe burn trauma, many of whom are in constant acute pain.
Like other nursing positions, burn unit nurse jobs play a critical role in keeping patients stabilized. They monitor patients’ vitals, dispense medication, change dressings and maintain patient records. Burn unit nurses may also have to ventilate their patients.
Although they perform similar duties as traditional nurses, burn ICU nurse jobs are among the most demanding. Because their patients are in so much pain, traditional nursing activities like drawing blood or changing dressing can be excruciating and take several attempts. It can be emotionally taxing, as well, because whenever a nurse touches the burn, they will cause the patient even more pain.
Patients with severe burns may need to spend months in the burn unit, so nurses often build lasting relationships. Although their jobs are demanding, most burn ICU nurses report a high level of job satisfaction.
