Like all health issues, the interrelationship between mind and body influences the state of health and wellness. Researchers are currently investigating a multitude of factors regarding prevention, cause, and treatment of eating disorders and obesity. There are no “quick fixes,” despite products that advertise themselves as such. Nurses must include education regarding the dangers of weight loss products that contain potentially harmful ingredients as part of their client/family instruction. They must also teach clients and families about the dangers of websites that promote and even encourage behaviors that contribute to the development of eating disorders. Nurses are often the first members of the healthcare team to recognize the signs and symptoms of eating disorders or the need to intervene when a person is gaining too much weight. Nurses should strive to use such knowledge to improve practice and provide leadership for the improvement of client care. References 1. American Psychiatric Association.
